The Garden Chapter 8 Part 2: Paris Fights in Orbit and Loses Grayrose

Torres asks the question everyone on the surface is thinking. What about Voyager?

Tuvok says contact is gone because of the ion field and citadel shields. But they have reason to believe the ship is holding its own. Torres does the math anyway. Five Andirrim hulls against one stranded Starfleet vessel. The odds do not comfort her.

Andirrim Betrayal Traps Paris as Voyager Fights for Survival

Paris has two hours. He treats it like a dare.

The team splits across fields. Grain first. Orchard next. He starts beaming loads to Voyager while robots keep cutting. Kim confirms the Andirrim are still approaching with shields on standby. Nothing dramatic yet. Grain vanishes from sleds in bursts of transporter light. Seven tons total is not a full resupply, but it might keep the crew from getting scurvy.

Andirrim Raiders Arrive as Voyager Races to Harvest Kirse Food

The trade deal is locked in. Torres’s engineering solution worked. Janeway made the final bargain with Adamant. Voyager gets food. The Kirse get transporter upgrades. Paris leads a harvesting team on the surface. Tuvok and Torres are at the citadel helping install the new system.

Paris Surveys Kirse Farmlands and Gardeners Turn Hostile

Tom Paris is strapped into a Kirse shuttle, watching Grayrose bank so hard he wonders if she is immune to g-force or just trying to kill him. Revek is along for the ride, and the whole trip feels like a mix of a theme park ride and a job interview. Paris has started thinking of Voyager as home. That is new for him.

Ten days at warp seven. Faster than standard cruising. Tom Paris glued to the sensors jumping every time a new star system appeared. None of them Kirse. Janeway finally banished him from the bridge when his watch ended an hour ago.

Tuvok Mind-Melds With the Sperian and Becomes Something Entirely New

Book: Star Trek: Voyager #5 - Incident at Arbuk

Chapter 8 is the weirdest and most intense stretch of the book so far. Tuvok walks into sickbay after Vulcan mental exercises and tells the Doctor to monitor him through the mind-meld. The Doctor is not thrilled. His databases scream warnings about joining with unconscious, unwilling, unfamiliar, possibly brain-damaged subjects. Tuvok already knows. He has taken precautions.

Voyager Senior Briefing: Neelix Serves Goulash While the Tube Counts Down

Book: Star Trek: Voyager #5 - Incident at Arbuk
Author: John Gregory Betancourt
ISBN: 9780671520482

Chapter 6 is one of those moments where the book reminds you that Voyager is still a crew trying to eat dinner while a planet-killer spins in the background. Captain Janeway calls her senior officers together at 1700 hours. The tube is building power again. Tuvok and Ensign Dvorak think it fires in about an hour and ten minutes. Everyone shows up looking grim, which is fair, because they just watched a space city get wiped out.
