Curley gets a leg cramp, burns warnings, and gets shot. Then Ewing goes down too after blister problems from bad shoes.
People in town still cheer. Banners go up. The Major plays to the crowd. That contrast is the point. The killings are public, but the event still runs like entertainment.
Garraty and McVries start talking about the Prize and whether any of this has meaning. Underneath it, fear is growing fast.
For me, this chapter proves the horror is social, not just personal. Everyone is part of it.
