Before they reach his house, Bart shows the hitchhiker the roadwork site and asks what she sees. She calls it ugly and tells a childhood memory about construction and raw earth. At home she cooks a full meal, and the mood turns almost normal for a while.
They drink, watch TV, and talk about why his life exploded. She keeps asking direct questions. He keeps circling and cannot give a clean answer. She offers sex at the end of the night. He says no, partly because he wants her to take his money and keep moving, and partly because he is unsure of himself.
This half is quieter and sadder than the first. Bart wants connection, but he also keeps pulling away from it. The chapter does a good job showing how physical closeness does not fix emotional confusion. It also sets up how much pressure he is carrying into the days ahead.
