Bart brings presents to Mary at her parents’ house. Their talk is gentle but stiff, full of old reflexes and pauses. For a moment it feels like something serious might be said, then the moment passes.
Mary invites him for Christmas dinner. He says no, worrying that holiday emotions could spiral. As he leaves, she reminds him about Wally Hamner’s New Year’s party. He hesitates, worries Ordner might be there, then says he might go.
They share a second kiss at the door. Mary is teary. Bart gives a comforting line he does not fully believe.
I like the restraint here. No big explosion. Just two people trying to be kind while standing in different futures.
