Rage Chapter 03 Review: A Bathroom Pause Before the Break

Chapter three is mostly Charlie alone with his thoughts, and that is not a safe place. He stops in the bathroom, eats Ritz crackers from a Baggie to calm his stomach, and drifts into a memory of Sandra Cross at a school dance losing the button on her Wranglers. The memory is sexual, awkward, and weirdly tender at the same time.
Then his thoughts swing back to Mr. Denver, Mr. Grace, and Greenmantle. That swing is the chapter. He cannot hold one emotion for long. He jokes, obsesses, gets gross, then turns frightened. Even the high school toilet flush becomes a mini panic point when he compares it to a 747 and imagines everyone hearing him.
The most telling moment is when he plans to scribble a joke on the wall and instead writes “EAT SHIT” so hard that his Flair pen snaps. Then he hears someone behind him, closes his eyes, and forces himself under control before heading upstairs.
I read this as a private meltdown disguised as hallway downtime. Nothing public has exploded yet, but the pressure is very obvious now.
