My Take
This ending section surprised me in a good way. Pete is still a kid who made dumb choices earlier. But when the pressure hits, he turns practical and brave.
And that feels earned. The story seeded the magnifying glass early, so this payoff does not feel random.
Rachel and Blake also matter here. Their fear gives urgency, and their warnings keep the scene grounded.
The final win is not clean. The children survive, but people are gone for good. So the ending feels like relief mixed with damage, which is the right tone for this story.
