My Take

This chapter works because Julianne is practical and grounded. She is not careless. She is not there to play hero. She just sees a situation and responds.

So when she dies, it feels mean in the right horror way. The book is saying skill does not always save you when the thing you face breaks normal rules.

I also liked the small detail of her horse waiting in the trailer. It adds a strange sad note. The world keeps going while people vanish.

This section also builds pressure well. We now know the station wagon is repeating a pattern. It is not one freak attack. It is feeding.
