I’m starting a retelling of Marooned, Christie Golden’s second Voyager novel. If you watched the show, you know the setup: a Federation ship stranded 70,000 light-years from home. This book drops them into a pirate trap built around one crew member nobody would expect to be the target.
What this book is
Marooned follows Voyager to a trading station called Oasis. The welcome seems warm. Administrator Aren Yashar is charming. Shore leave looks routine. Then Kes vanishes, the station turns out to be a holographic fake, and half the away team gets knocked out cold.
What follows is not a simple rescue story. Janeway and several officers end up stranded on a harsh planet called Mishkara. Paris gets sick from an insect bite. Neelix treks across open terrain with a weird little pet. Kes deals with a four-thousand-year-old pirate who has very specific plans for her.
Golden wrote this early in the Voyager run. She clearly watched the show and understood what made these characters tick. Janeway stays stubborn. Paris cracks jokes even when he’s dying. Torres blames herself for things she couldn’t control. Chakotay worries about Stockholm syndrome. Tuvok stays Tuvok.
Why I’m retelling it
Licensed Trek fiction from the 1990s gets overlooked. People remember the episodes. The novels fade. But Marooned does something the show often couldn’t: it gives every major character a real arc in one story. The B-plot with the pirate courier Kula Dhad is genuinely funny. The Sshoush-shin aliens feel distinct. And the ending ties back to a flower Kes planted six months earlier, which is the kind of small detail that makes a book feel lived-in.
How this series works
One post per major story beat. I’ll retell what happens, then share what I think works and what doesn’t. No spoiler policy beyond the section I’m covering, so you can read along even if you’ve never picked up the book.
The book has a prologue, then runs as one continuous narrative with a mid-book section titled “Prisoner.” I’ll split the long wilderness sequences where the pacing shifts.

We start with the prologue, where a pirate commander decides he doesn’t want Voyager’s ship. He wants Kes. Then we walk through the Oasis trap, the space chase, the crash landing, the hike across Mishkara, and the final confrontation in the Ja’in mining tunnels.
