Chapter 20 keeps Tess in performance mode as she calls Patsy and tries to sound mostly okay. The phone talk is ordinary on the surface, but every line carries strain. She is editing herself in real time.
Her body does not let her pretend for long. Nausea hits hard, and the contrast between polite conversation and physical aftermath is jarring.
I think this chapter closes the sequence well by showing two truths at once: she can function enough to speak, and she is still deep inside trauma.
