He waits there four days, alone and hungry, eating old potatoes and then hated turnips. The chapter emphasizes patience as part of courage.
My take: I appreciated this pause. It shows that brave plans include boring, uncomfortable waiting. Dennis is not enjoying adventure. He is cold, underfed, and uncertain, but he still sticks to instructions. That discipline makes later risks feel earned and believable.
