They watch the sleigh vanish into snow and lantern light, then spend a sleepless night fearing the worst. The scene captures how absolute state power feels to ordinary people. A single knock can turn a home into a place of panic.
My take: This chapter builds tension beautifully with simple elements: wind, night, boots, and a short order from authority. The fear is believable because nobody gets explanations.
