Dolan's Cadillac Part 3: The Fake Road and the Fall on Route 71
This part is mostly waiting, and the waiting is brutal.
He finishes the setup, hides the detour signs, stages his van like a normal roadside problem, and watches the road. Every car becomes a test. Then comes the worst moment: a Cadillac appears, but it is the wrong one.
He almost triggers the trap on innocent people.
That scene is one of the strongest in the whole story for me. It shows that even after years of planning, the final seconds are still messy and human. He doubts himself. He panics. Then the real gray Cadillac appears.
From there, the fall is fast. Too fast for Dolan’s team to react. The fake road collapses and the car drops hard into the trench. The trap works almost exactly as planned.
But the story does not give a clean heroic beat. The narrator does not celebrate. He gets methodical again. Reset signs. Avoid witnesses. Control the scene.
I also felt a weird emotional shift near the end of this part. Once he hears Dolan’s voice from inside the wreck, there is a flicker of sympathy, then he shuts it down. That tiny flicker matters. It reminds us he is still a person, even now.
