Janeway Slows Down in a Dead Star System

Chapter 5 slows the pace, literally. Janeway orders impulse as Voyager nears another system. Neelix mutters that if she insists on crossing the cluster, she could at least do it faster. Nothing alive out here except the Hachai and P’nir, and you will not get supplies from them.

Janeway ignores him and tells Kim to scan the area. Take your time.

Chakotay pushes back too

This is interesting. Chakotay is not arguing about entering the cluster anymore. He is asking whether they need to investigate every single system along the way.

Janeway says yes. They are looking for whatever made the tetryon beam. It was not sitting in open space when they were scanned. Maybe it moved into a system and is hiding in the clutter. Or maybe it is farther ahead and they are wasting time. Both could be true. She would rather look and be wrong than skip and miss the answer.

She glances at the crumbling Hachai doll beside her chair. Even if they do not find the beam source, learning about these cultures might matter when the war fleets Neelix keeps mentioning finally show up.

Chakotay’s lips tighten. He straightens up and goes quiet. Janeway notices. Eleven hours on the bridge is getting to people.

A class-K system with one surprise

Kim reports a boring class-K star. Ten planets. Airless inner rocks. Venus-like greenhouse world. Outer gas giants with rings. No carbon-based life anywhere… wait.

Life-form readings on the fourth planet.

Janeway is genuinely pleased. She had started to think the whole cluster was a graveyard. Shields up. Paris takes them in carefully.

The world has towns and roads but no tech. No aircraft, no electricity, no radio, no subspace noise. Pre-industrial society. Prime Directive says do not interfere. Janeway decides not to dip close enough for a detailed visual scan. Sensor readings are enough.

Then the anomaly hits. No metals anywhere in the planetary crust. Flashing red on the display. The whole planet is metal-depleted, like the ruined worlds before it.

Except one spot Chakotay flags in grid sector 63-24 north. Processed metals on the surface. Artificial structure.

The ship they could not finish

Telescopic scan on screen. Bulbous alien hull, partly built, surrounded by wooden scaffolding. Chakotay thinks they were constructing it, not crashing it. Nobody around now. Kim says hull corrosion suggests fifty or sixty years abandoned.

Neelix leans over the rail. Hachai design. They were building a warship and ran out of metal.

Janeway stares at the image, tries to picture four-armed stalk-eyed builders, and turns away. No tetryon beams here. No active war. Not their problem.

“Take us back out, Mr. Paris. Warp two.”

My reaction

This chapter is quieter but it fills in the war’s aftermath nicely. The cluster is not just exploded planets. It is also a primitive culture stuck on a world with no metals in the ground, and an unfinished warship rotting under scaffolding. That is a specific, sad detail.

Janeway’s choice to stop and look at each system frustrates Chakotay and Neelix, but it makes sense for her character. She is a scientist captain chasing a cosmic mystery. The book is also setting up tension between speed and thoroughness, which matters later when they find something much bigger than an abandoned hull.

The Hachai doll on the armrest is becoming a motif. Every stop reminds the crew what this war cost.
