Janeway is back on the bridge. Chakotay briefs her while Torres keeps hunting the missing. B’Elanna will not delegate. Harry and Tom are her friends. She is not letting the console go.

The probe network is working, but the desert settlement is worse than the jungle for interference. Torres catches a flicker of Kayla’s commbadge, then loses it. Without the antidote in Kayla’s system, she is as invisible to transporters as any Urrythan wrapped in the One Voice.

Janeway does not want to send anyone else down. Too many losses already. Then Paris calls from the shuttle. Almost airborne. Kim needs Sickbay. Kes already gave him the antidote on the ground. Torres can beam Harry out.

Janeway asks about Kes. Kes wants to go back for Kayla. She can sense Urrythans when tricorders cannot. She can administer the antidote on contact.

Neelix bounces at Janeway’s shoulder demanding to replace Kes. Janeway shuts it down gently but firmly. Too much interference to risk another beam to the shuttle. She tells Neelix to pray if his people do that. He bows his head.

One more mission

Paris turns the shuttle back toward the desert. Kes goes quiet, listening to the planet again.

“Something wonderful is going to happen,” she says.

Tom cannot feel it the way she does. He felt the tunnel cracks. That was enough sensation for him.

Below, Kayla lies on an altar like carved alabaster. Fresh Ambiana blossoms surround her. Pollen thick in the air. A dozen Urrythans sit in a circle singing. Each voice different. Together they make one chord. The ritual is dragging Kayla into that sound.

Inside Kayla’s head, a small warm hideaway still holds. She knows if she surrenders, Kayla stops existing. The harmony is beautiful. It is also not hers. Not her people’s path. She clings to that.

The singers do not know she is fighting. They think this is heaven on earth.

Ghost town panic

Leaders are gone. Ban has not returned on schedule. Followers wonder if the star travelers beat him. The ground trembles. Sentries see Paris’s shuttle and scatter in fear.

Paris lands beyond the village. Sets up the probe Voyager beamed down. No Urrythans bother him during setup. Either they are planning an ambush or they are too scared to care.

Kes senses scattered fear in the settlement. Imperfect stitches in the larger tapestry. No leaders present. The quake might look like Starfleet’s fault.

She hears the chant. That is Kayla’s ceremony. They have to move now.

Walking into the song

The village architecture is eerie. Tall thin buildings stretched like taffy for people twice human height. Heavy shutters. They live underground and still hide from sunlight above ground.

The music gets louder. Paris catches individual voices that slip back into the chord. Powerful stuff. Then the Ambiana smell hits.

Kes says the pollen will not affect them with antidote already in their systems. Paris still does not love trusting a drug cooked up the same day. He does it anyway.

In the ceremonial square, Kayla lies buried in yellow blossoms while singers sway and the earth convulses. Paris sees funeral lilies in his head and gets angry. Anger helps him stomp off-rhythm through the chant and keep his head clear.

He shoves the first singer aside. The Urrythan keeps singing on the ground, glazed eyes unfocused. Wrong. Creepy wrong.

Kes reaches Kayla with the antidote injection ready.

A shrill voice cries “Stop.”

Ban’s people pour from an underground entrance. Kes hesitates. Paris freezes.

The ground erupts. The sound swallows everything.

My take

This chapter is the ceremonial horror peak. Kayla’s internal resistance is written better than I expected. The book takes her agency seriously even while she is flat on an altar.

Torres caring personally about Harry and Tom is a small beat that lands. She is not just the angry engineer stereotype here.

Neelix getting told to pray is surprisingly moving. Janeway knows she cannot fix his fear with logistics.

The village description is good weird alien worldbuilding. Stretch-limousine houses are a visual I will remember.

Paris using anger to break hypnotic rhythm is a nice detail. Not every hero needs a clever technobabble solution. Sometimes you just march out of step.

Ending on a cliffhanger right as Kes is about to inject Kayla? Classic serial structure. Chapter 15 picks up with Tuvok’s thread converging on the same altar.
