Chrysalis Chapter 13: Paris Climbs Down to Save Kim

Paris and Kes are still underground, chasing the sounds of phaser fire. Footprints show Urrythans flanking to set an ambush. Tom hopes Janeway was ready. Neither of them wants to think about the alternative.
The walls vibrate harder. Kes goes dreamy and says it is not collapse. It is Awakening. Joy. Release. Every cell becoming one note in a chord. Paris, ever practical, says he would like the volume lower.
Then the phasers stop.
That silence is worse than the shooting.
The chasm
Paris runs. Kes yells a warning. The floor opens under his feet. He dives sideways, grabs her, and they tumble into a side tunnel as the main passage drops away.
Below them, ruins upon ruins. Pillars. Stairs to nowhere. Doors opening into open air. Paris thinks of Escher prints he once browsed on Voyager. Accurate comparison. This place is a nightmare in stone.
Kes senses movement. Harry Kim is on a narrow ledge partway down the pit. If that ledge goes, he is done.
Mountain rescue with shuttle gear
Tom checks his pack. Synthetic line. Academy rock-climbing experience he barely used since graduation. Not exactly mission standard gear, but it is what he has.
He shouts to Kim. Weak answer. Good enough.
Plan: edge along the wall to a wider ledge, lower rope, haul Harry up. Kes stays topside to manage the line.
The traverse is awful. Loose stone. Sweat in his eyes. Vibrations numbing his hands. Kes moves like she was born on ledges. Of course she does.
From the new position, Kim is visible but the rope falls two meters short. Harry has a twisted knee. Cannot climb up to meet it.
Paris curses and picks a lower ledge about five meters down. He wraps the line around stone, ties in, and rappels backward over the edge like it is a holodeck program and not a collapsing alien catacomb.
Slow climb, fast heart
He gets the line to Kim. Harry has to help on the way up. Tom keeps talking because silence would let fear win. Test your handholds. No sudden moves. Standard instructor chatter that suddenly matters for real.
Kim scrapes over the ledge half-dead from effort. Paris sends the rope back up to Kes. Kim goes first on the ascent. Tom follows. They haul Harry toward the tunnel mouth and keep moving.
Ten minutes later a voice stops them. Urrythan hands up. No phaser fire needed. It is one of Ban’s people, offering escort to the surface and the shuttle. Tom has no better plan. He nods.
Sunlight hits like a dream. Their guide vanishes without ceremony. Paris slaps his commbadge on reflex, not expecting much.
Janeway answers.
Back to the ship
Tom nearly drops Kim hearing her voice. She wants him on the shuttle. Now. Kim needs Sickbay. Kes already gave them the antidote at the shuttle, so Voyager can lock on him.
Paris grins and reports he has “a certain young Ensign and a beautiful blond medical assistant” with him.
Kes smiles. Kim manages a weak grin. Tom says let’s go home.
My take
This is pure Tom Paris chapter and the book knows it. Rappelling into a psychic earthquake pit to save Harry Kim is peak action-hero nonsense, but Wilson sells the physical details well enough that you buy it.
Kes as belay operator works. She is not just psychic exposition here. She keeps the rope tight and reads the ledge situation.
The Escher ruins visual is memorable. Layered civilizations under the tunnels explain why the planet feels so charged. Old bones under old bones.
Paris cracking a joke to Janeway right after almost dying is very in character. So is Janeway cutting him off with orders.
Ban’s runner showing up to guide them out ties the chapters together cleanly. Redemption arc in motion.
My one gripe: the rope being exactly too short, then the lower-ledge solution, then hauling Kim up again is a lot of cliff choreography. It reads a bit like a puzzle box. Still fun.
