Big Driver Chapter 11: The Rock of Tears

Tess finds herself sitting on a rock, crying her eyes out. The shock is starting to wear off, replaced by the crushing weight of what happened. “I was raped, I was raped, I was raped!” She keeps saying it to herself, as if trying to make her brain accept the truth.

She looks at her filthy carpet shawl and her aching body. She thinks about the women in the pipe and the bugs. It’s too much for anyone to handle.

But then, that raspy Bonnie Tyler voice comes back. She tells herself, “Yes, yes,” and then—she goes away again. Her mind is still blinking out like a faulty lightbulb. It’s her only way to cope with the sheer horror of her reality.
